Dry skin is more common in the winter than in the warmer summer months. The dryness is from the changes in humidity at this time of the year which can irritate the skin. Dry skin affect many during the winter, and severity can vary significantly. There are many treatments that can help replenish and moisturize the skins or even help prevent the skin from becoming dry. This article looks at dry skin in more detail, including causes, symptoms, and why Skinworx is one of our favourite ways to prevent and treat.
What causes dry skin?
Winter brings changes in humidity and temperature that create the perfect conditions for dry skin. The thin outermost layer of the skin’s epidermis, known as stratum corneum or the skin barrier, is a combination of lipids and dead skin cells. This forms a layer of protection from harmful toxins entering the body, when damage is sustained the skin often appears to be dry or irritated.
Research has shown that moisture is the key for your skin barrier to function properly.
- In winter there is less moisture and lipids in the skin barrier.
- People also often turn on their indoor heating in winter which reduces air humidity.
- Harsh outdoor weather such as cold, winds and rain also strips our skin of its natural oils.
- Hot showers or baths causes damage to our skin which leads to dryness.
- Harsh soaps and scrubbing skin also cause damage to the skin and dries out our natural oils.
- Other factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, and environmental factors also affects skin moisture.
All these factors help contribute to dryness and irritation.
Affects of dry skin
Dryness from a damaged skin barrier can lead to:
- rough patches
- redness, in lighter skin tones
- a raw, sensitive-to-the-touch feeling
Why we choose Skinworx
“As I got older, my skin began to get drier and drier, and I couldn’t find a cream suitable that would alleviate my excessive dryness.
Due to my experience in helping create cosmetic products, I learnt about the significance of the water-to-oil ratio in skin creams, and that most have a much higher water content than oil.
Because oil comprises more moisture and nutrients and forms a protective barrier, I knew it was essential to have a higher proportion of oil-to-water than is the norm. Very simply — I wanted relief for very dry skin conditions and resolved to make it as natural and as affordable as possible.”
